Tet, or Tet Nguyen Dan, is the traditional Vietnamese New Year and is celebrated by the Vietnamese people.

In contrast, Lunar New Year refers to the celebrations of the new year that take place in many countries and civilizations that follow the lunar calendar. This includes Tet in Vietnam, Chinese New Year, Korean New Year, and other events of a similar nature throughout Asia.

The primary distinction between Tet and Lunar New Year is that Tet particularly refers to the new year of Vietnam, whereas Lunar New Year is the name given to the new year celebrations held in many countries and cultures that follow the lunar calendar.

Tet and Lunar New Year are both celebrated at the same time of year, at the beginning of a new lunar year, and often involve comparable customs and traditions, such as visiting family and friends, exchanging presents, making special delicacies, and attending cultural performances.

In Vietnam, there are numerous methods to celebrate Tet, the traditional Vietnamese New Year. Among the most prevalent methods are:

  • Tet is a time for families to celebrate the beginning of a new year by gathering together. People frequently return to their hometowns to be with loved ones and to pay their respects at the family altar.

  • Homes are decked with flowers, especially yellow chrysanthemums, peach blooms, and kumquat trees, as well as other traditional decorations, to bring good fortune and wealth in the new year.
  • Traditional performances, including lion dances, dragon dances, and other cultural events, are held to bring good fortune and prosperity in the new year.
  • Many people wear new clothes on the first day of Tet as a way to begin the new year with a clean slate and a new wardrobe.
  • Enjoying Fireworks: Traditionally, fireworks are fired off at midnight on the last day of the previous year to say goodbye and welcome the new year.
